Press Release
3rd Brazilian Film Festival in Beirut
September 4 – September 9, 2018 at Metropolis Empire Sofil - Achrafieh, Beirut
September 11 – September 16, 2018 at Cascada Mall Empire - Bekaa
The Embassy of Brazil in Beirut and Brazil-Lebanon Cultural Center (Brasiliban), in collaboration
with Metropolis Association and Cascada Mall, have the pleasure to present the 3rd Brazilian
Film Festival, set to take place between September 4 and September 9, 2018 at Metropolis
Empire Sofil, Achrafieh, Beirut and at Cascada Mall Empire, Bekaa from September 11 to September 16.

The festival will open with the film João, o Maestro (directed by Mauro Lima), a blockbuster in
Brazil, based on the true-life story of world renowned Brazilian classical pianist João Carlos
Martins, who at age 20 had his first solo concert in the Carnegie Hall, and his rise to fame
despite a life-long battle with physical illness. An inspiring story of talent, love, tragedy and perseverance.

The other feature films will be:
Just Like Our Parents (‘Como Nossos Pais’) (directed by Laís Bodanzky) The film revolves
around the dilemmas of a woman, Rosa, who has to be flawless and infallible in her job, as a
mother, daughter and wife. The harder she tries, the more she feels she’s getting it all wrong.
One day her mother drops a bombshell, and Rosa begins to rediscover her true self.

The Other End (‘Fala Comigo’) (directed by Felipe Sholl) Diogo (17) likes to make anonymous
phone calls to his psychoanalyst mother’s patients. That’s how he meets Angela (43), who had
just been left by her husband. Although she is first irritated by learning about Diogo and his
secret, Angela feels attracted and he brings a new sense to her life. Feeling a true bond
between each other, Angela and Diogo fall in love. They have to face disagreement of society
and fight for their relationship.

Araby (‘Arábia’) (directed by João Dumans & Affonso Uchoa) A hit among the critics, “Araby”
revolves around Andre, a young boy that lives in an industrial neighborhood in Ouro Preto,
Brazil, near an old aluminium factory. One day, he discovers a notebook of one of the factory
workers and plunges into dramas of the industrial workers.

Bach in Brazil (‘Filhos de Bach’) (directed by Ansgar Ahlers) “Bach in Brazil” is a funny and
compelling story about two worlds thrown together. A retired German music teacher, Martin,
ends up teaching music to the kids of a juvenile prison in Brazil. Bach’s music and Brazil’s
percussion instruments mix perfectly. The journey helps Martin and the prison inmates to
rediscover their joy of living.

The Movie of my Life (‘O Filme da Minha Vida’) (directed by Selton Mello) Vincent Cassel
and Selton Mello are together in this Brazilian film with a French touch. The son of a Frenchman
with a Brazilian woman deals with rites of passage from youth to adulthood, his first love and the
absence of his father, who abandoned him. Now it's time for him to put things together and
become the protagonist of his own story. Based on the novel “A distant father”, by Antonio Skármeta.
